Legal Experience

Experience: My experience in mediation and other ADR work did not follow the customary path. Most of my legal career was in the arena of public policy, as I served for three years in the US Department of Commerce in Washington, DC, and thereafter for about 30 years I represented companies and trade associations in private government-relations practice at the federal level. A large and important component of my work was negotiating, mediating, conciliating, evaluating, and facilitating, i.e., using dispute-resolution processes to reach agreements on legislation, regulations, and other public policies, as well as means for their implementation. Clients for which I was so engaged came from a variety of industries including health insurance, electric and water utilities, transportation (air, rail, ocean shipping, pipeline, motor carrier), telecommunications, environment, finance, foreign trade, agriculture, food, and so on. Disputants in issues and matters worked on included client companies and trade associations; their competitors; economists and other experts; environmental or consumer groups; federal departments and agencies; White House; Senate and House Members, staffs, and committees; state and local governments; and political groups. I had previously served a year as law clerk to Hon. Edward C. McLean, US District Judge in the Southern District of New York, and for over two years I was associate lawyer in a New York law firm doing antitrust and corporate securities litigation and related matters before moving to DC. Since mid 2002, I have been mostly retired. However, during 2005 I studied dispute resolution at Baker University and completed the mediation practicum at Johnson County Courthouse. As of this writing (March 2006) I am in start-up of my new private practice in mediation and conflict management.
