The court recently became aware of a scam where fake debt collectors use threatening tactics to coerce consumers to pay off loans that may or may not exist. A “Final Notice” is sent by the scammers via facsimile on fake U.S. District Court letterhead with Chief Judge Kathryn H. Vratil’s forged signature. The letter demands payment on outstanding balances and directs the consumer to call a phone number to “discuss payment of the debt.” The U.S. District Court would not collect debts on loans in this manner or ask for credit card information. The letter has been turned over to authorities for investigation. For more information, click here.
